In 2011, Time Magazine wrote, “the second most important decision you will make as a parent  (apart from deciding to have a kid in the first place) is deciding which school for them to enroll in.” In today’s competitive economy, parents face difficult decisions when it comes to finding the perfect school for their children. Chula Vista is known for their high standard for K-12 education, scoring at least an 8/10 in their major school districts.

The Sweetwater Union High School District, headquartered in Chula Vista, serves as the primary secondary school district. The Chula Vista Elementary School District, the largest K-6 district in the State of California with 44 campuses, serves publicly educated kindergarten through sixth-grade students.

California has an open enrollment policy, which means your child can attend any school in the district (called intradistrict choice), which includes charter schools, as long as there is space. Some districts will allow your child to attend a school in a neighboring district as well (called interdistrict choice.)

Chula Vista’s schools are well above average–scoring an 8/10 compared to all other schools nationally (keep in mind that these scores are calculated based on Standardized Test Results, which can be a skewed metric.) Here are four excellent schools in Chula Vista to consider when you decide to move to the area.

Discovery Charter School scores a 9/10 on GreatSchools.com and scored 4-stars through their parent reviews. Discovery is a STEM academy with every lesson having a science, technology, engineering, or math focus. The teachers are said to have an outstanding, hands-on, sitting-on-the-floor-and-writing-on-the-(erasable)-desks approach. Apparently, their enthusiasm for teaching smart students has paid off since they are well above average on their recent API score (900)!

3. Allen (Ella B.) Elementary School

The school, which functions under four overarching rules (Be Kind, Respectful, Responsible, and Safe) is applauded by the school district and parents alike. According to tens of online reviews, Allen Elementary School is a wonderful, small community school with a great team of teachers and staff.
